How to get Visualizing Technology Student Data Files
if you lose or cannot read the CD that comes with the text
The disk that comes with the Visualizing Technology text is a CD.
If you only have a DVD reader in your PC you cannot get the Student Data files from the CD.
If you lose the CD that comes with your text you have to get to the Student Data files.
You need to download them from the Publisher's Companion Web site for the text.
ALL of the files you will need are in one separate compressed file at the Companion Web site.
It is at: Visualizing Technology
They are all in one large (97.2 MB - it will take a few minutes to
download) compressed or zipped folder.
I recommend you save the files on your USB removable drive. You will learn more about file compression in Chapter 3 of the Visualizing Technology text.
But, for now below is a tutorial on how to get the files you need to do your assignments in the
Visualizing Technology
text.
Go to the Visualizing Technology Companion Web site.
Click on the link to Student Data Files.
You will get a pop up window that asks:
"Do you want to open or save this file?" Click the  button.
You will be asked where to save it. I have clicked on the left and selected the Desktop.
The name of the file comes from the Web site and is: student_data_files.zip
After download is completed close the Companion Web site and minimize all open windows to see your Desktop.
You should see the compressed (zipped) folder on your Desktop.
RIGHT click and click Extract All...
The Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders wizard will show on the Desktop.
1. Do not change the file name
2. Uncheck the "Show extracted files when complete" box
3. Click the  button
You now have a regular folder on your Desktop named "student_data_files"
NOTE: DO NOT OPEN and try to work with the files in the zipped folder.
Without more knowledge you cannot change, save, save as, or rename them for your use.
Double click on the normal folder icon to Open.
On the left click on "student_data_files" and the chapters with files will be on the right of the Explorer window.
These are the files and pictures you will need to complete the assignments.
Here I have opened the chapter_01 folder and the files are on the right.
You will need the "ch01_friend.jpg" file for the "How To" assignment in chapter 1.
